Kinofilm Award Winners 2006
Kinofilm 10th Anniversary Manchester International Short Film Festival supported by Baby Cow Manchester 10 Years of Kino. 10 Awards for the Jury¹s Best Films of the Festival. Following the hard and long deliberation of the juries at the 10th Kino Festival, the following films were nominated and awarded the best films of the festival in the following categories. The CDN North Award - Best BlueFiRE! UK Short Film Winner "Seeker" Dir/Wri: Nwanguma and Hutchings / Pro: Mari Tyson & Bazzard / Prod Co: Tractor Films / Hi-D / 24¹10² / UK / 2004 This moving story effectively explored social issues of asylum seekers, with a touching musical score and a strong lead performance. Runner up "Hey Day" Dir/Wri: Rachel Wang / Pro: Mark Currie / Prod Co: Chocolate Films / Digibeta / 9¹50² / UK / 2004 A competent, visually engaging drama which resolved itself with finesse The CDN North Award - Best BlueFiRE! World Short Film Winner "Crickets" Dir: Matan Gugenheim / Pro: Maja Manor 16mm / 17¹ / Israel / 2004 This is confident and original film. Chosen for its strong performances, compelling story and disturbing theme, 'Crickets' is a powerful statement which represents a new and genuine talent from Israeli cinema. Runner up "Rain Is Falling" Dir: Holger Ernst / 35mm / 15mins / Germany / 2004 This film was chosen for its all round outstanding quality, in terms of story, composition, cinematography and direction. Beautifully crafted, Rain is falling truly achieved cinematic status. BlueFiRE Special Commendation "Exoticore" Dir: Nicholas Provost / 35mm / 27¹2¹¹ / Belgium / 2004 A fascinating approach and intriguing story line. Each jury member felt it created an unusual if not uncomfortable verve which resonated long after the credits The Kinofilm Award International Panarama - Best International Short Film Winner "Luminaria " Dir: Alvaro Gimenez Sarmiento / Pro: Maria del Puy Alvarado / 35mm / 13¹ / Spain / 2005 A searing, luminescent performance from Macarena Gomez as a young woman who must choose between heroin and her child. Runner up "Mas Quel Mundo (More Than the World" Dir/Pro: Lautaro Nunez De Arco / 35mm / 12¹ / Argentina / 2004 A young hunter whose only friend is his dog falls in love with a girl during a folk party. The Kinofilm Award European Focus - Best European Short Film Winner "I Always Wanted to Work in a Factory" Dir/Wri: Esteban Cresto / Prod Co: Africanauan / 35mm / 9¹ / Spain / 2005 A snapshot of the moment when everything seems possibleŠ just before those doors close forever. Touching performance and astonishing sound design. Runner Up "Slavek The Shit" Dir: Grimur Haksnarson / 35mm / 15¹ / Czech Republic/Iceland/Estonia /2005 An unlikely love story which takes place in a public toilet. The Kinofilm Award North by Northwest - Best Short from the North Winner "Blue Dog Blues" Dir: Mair Doyle / 4¹ / UK An arrogant dog has humiliation thrust upon him in the form of a plastic cone scratch projector! His need for an elusive tasty snack highlights his frustrationŠ.
